Nigeria: The Rising Star

Nigeria's Language Mosaic

Most Nigerian northerners speak Hausa, an Afroasiatic language, while most southerners speak languages from to the Niger-Congo family. Some from the northeast of the country speak Kanuri, which is of the Nilo-Saharan stock. If that boggled your mind enough, think again: Nigeria has 512 living languages (nine already died out), which makes a majority of Nigerians fluent with more than two languages. English, however, remains important, as it serves as the countryfs official language and only unifying tongue amidst the great linguistic diversity.
